Cultural Getaway to Kyoto
Friday, December 6 - Saturday, December 7
Depart Tokyo and embark on the Shinkansen, Japan’s famed bullet train, to the Kansai region for a cultural getaway to Kyoto. As Japan’s capital city for more than 1,000 years until 1868, Kyoto has protected much of the history and traditional landmarks that once made it the epicentre for Japan. This very full trip will give you the chance to explore cultural landmarks and to learn more about this enchanting ancient capital city.
This trip includes an extremely special and exclusive visit to Sugimoto Residence, a private home and one of the largest machiya (traditional townhouses) in Kyoto. Visitors will have the chance to experience what life has like in Kyoto during the 18th and 19th centuries, a life closer to nature and the beauty of everyday items. The visit will also include a traditional breakfast with the family.
Our guide will be the present and 10th head of the family, Setsuko Sugimoto. She is very involved in preserving the lifestyle of the Sugimoto family, as well as preserving Kyoto's machiya and the culture and traditions of Kyoto’s burghers. Through writing and media appearances, she actively promotes the spirit of simplicity and thrift recorded in her book Saichū-oboe, by teaching Kyoto home cooking (obanzai) and other traditional Japanese cooking styles.
The Sugimoto Residence is a jewel of Kyoto, designated a Tangible Cultural Asset by Kyoto, as well as a National Important Property, and its garden is a National Site of Scenic Beauty. This exclusive event is supported by NHK.
